The complete guide to image metadata
Your photos contain a hidden layer of information — from camera settings and GPS coordinates to editing history and AI-generated content signals. Learn what's hiding in your images and why it matters.
What is image metadata?
Image metadata is structured information embedded within your photo files. When you take a picture with your phone or camera, the device automatically records dozens of data points: the exact date and time, GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken, camera make and model, lens information, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), flash usage, and even the orientation of the camera. If you edit the photo, software like Photoshop or Lightroom adds its own metadata about the edits performed. Social media platforms, AI image generators, and other tools add even more layers. All of this travels with the image file, invisible in normal viewing but accessible to anyone with the right tools.
The privacy risks hiding in your photos
The GPS coordinates in your photos are the most obvious privacy risk — they can reveal your home address, workplace, children's school, or vacation location to anyone who downloads the image. But the risks go deeper. Timestamps can establish your exact whereabouts at specific times. Camera serial numbers can link multiple photos to the same device, even across different platforms. Editing software metadata can reveal what tools you use. For journalists, activists, or anyone sharing photos online, this metadata can be a serious safety issue. Even for casual sharing, do you really want strangers knowing exactly where and when each photo was taken? Our viewer shows you everything, so you can make informed decisions.
Understanding C2PA and content credentials
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is a new open standard for verifying the origin of digital content. When a camera or software supports C2PA, it cryptographically signs the image with information about how it was created — including whether AI was involved. This creates a tamper-evident "nutrition label" for your image. Major companies including Adobe, Microsoft, and camera manufacturers are adopting C2PA. Our tool reads and displays C2PA manifests, showing you the complete provenance chain: what device captured the image, what software edited it, and whether AI generation or modification was involved. This is becoming increasingly important as AI-generated images flood the internet.
AI-generated content signals in metadata
AI image generators like DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and Adobe Firefly embed specific metadata in the images they create. These signals include the name of the AI model used, the prompts or parameters, timestamps of generation, and C2PA assertions marking the content as AI-generated. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok read these signals to automatically label AI-generated content. Our viewer detects and highlights these AI footprints, showing you exactly what AI-related metadata your image contains. This is crucial for creators who want to understand how their content will be labeled, or for anyone verifying whether an image is AI-generated.
How to use metadata insights responsibly
Viewing metadata is the first step toward taking control of your digital privacy. Use our tool to audit photos before sharing them online — check for GPS data, personal identifiers, or AI signals you didn't know were there. Photographers can verify that their copyright and contact information is properly embedded. Researchers and journalists can verify image authenticity by examining the provenance chain. If you find metadata you'd rather not share, use our Remove Metadata tool to strip it cleanly. Remember: metadata isn't inherently bad — it serves useful purposes like organizing photos and protecting copyright. The key is understanding what's there and making conscious choices about what to share.
